What should a coffee roaster charge on repeat orders of a subscribed bundle?

A coffee roaster selling bundles on subscription has three levers in Supr, and they combine: keep the bundle discount on every order (the default), limit it to the first orders, or change the subscription discount from a chosen order on. A separate setting decides whether existing subscribers move to a new price when you change a product's price.

Who this is for: For coffee roasters and other food and drink shops that sell bundles on subscription and need to decide what a customer pays on the second, third and later orders.

The example used here

A coffee roaster sells a $20 bag as a 3 bag bundle at 10% off, with a 5% subscription discount. One order is 3 x $20 = $60, which is $54.00 after the bundle discount and $51.30 after the subscription discount comes off that. The numbers are only an illustration; use your own discounts.

1. Keep the bundle discount on every renewal

On an offer with subscriptions, a subscribed bundle keeps its bundle discount on every order by default. Both discounts apply: the bundle sets the pack price, then the subscription discount comes off it. In the example, order 1, order 2 and order 12 all cost $51.30.

Choose this when the discount is the reason people subscribe, for example a coffee build-a-box at a fixed saving. It is also the easiest offer to explain.

2. Limit the bundle discount to the first orders

  1. In Shopify, open Supr Bundle & Subscription App > Offers, open the offer, then open a bundle option.
  2. Under Price and discount in its additional settings, turn on Bundle discount for the first orders only.
  3. Set the number of orders, the first one included, for example 3. It applies to every bundle option in the offer.

A subscribed bundle then pays the bundle price for those orders and the subscription option's own price after them. Skipped orders do not count. In the example, orders 1 to 3 cost $51.30 and from order 4 the subscription option's own price applies: for three $20 products and a 5% subscription discount, $57.00.

The product page says so under the bundle options ("On a subscription, the bundle price applies to your first 3 orders.", reworded under Design > Labels), and the renewal reminder before the first order without the bundle discount tells the customer too. The setting runs as a journey on the offer's bundles, which you can open under Grow > Journeys.

3. Change the subscription discount from a chosen order on

  1. Open the subscription option and click Add discount change under the discount.
  2. Enter After, the number of orders that get the current discount before the change, then the New discount type and its Value.
  3. Click Add discount change again to add a later change, for example 20% off from the 7th order.

This is the lever for loyalty: 10% off the first 3 orders, then 15% off. Checkout shows the first change. It runs as a journey for this option, listed in Grow > Journeys. Subscriptions already past a change move to the latest one they have reached after their next order.

What the customer pays in each case

ApproachOrder 1Order 2Order 6
Keep the bundle discount (default)$51.30$51.30$51.30
Bundle discount for the first 3 orders only$51.30$51.30$57.00
Keep it, and raise the subscription discount from 5% to 10% after 3 orders$51.30$51.30$48.60

The last row applies the 10% subscription discount to the $54.00 bundle price: $54.00 x 0.90 = $48.60.

When a product's price changes

By default a subscription keeps the price the customer signed up at: Prices are fixed at the time of purchase. Under Settings > Billing you can choose Prices are updated automatically as they change instead. Active and paused subscriptions that contain the product are then repriced, and the customer is charged the new price from their next renewal.

The subscription discount is recalculated on the new price. A percentage discount stays the same percentage, an amount off stays the same amount off, and a fixed price keeps charging its fixed price. Turning the setting on does not reprice anything by itself; the Sync prices bulk action on the Subscriptions list brings existing subscribers up to today's prices. Changes are processed in batches, so allow some time.

Questions

Do skipped orders count toward the first orders that get the bundle price?

No. Skipped orders do not count toward the number of first orders that get the bundle discount.

Does the bundle discount stack with the subscription discount?

By default both apply. The bundle sets the pack price, then the subscription discount comes off that price.

Will existing subscribers move to a new price when I change a product's price?

Not by default: prices are fixed at the time of purchase. Turn on automatic price updates under Settings > Billing to reprice active and paused subscriptions from their next renewal.

Where can I see a discount change after I set it?

Grow > Journeys lists the journey for each option's discount change, and for the bundle discount limited to the first orders.

Every setting is covered in the help center: A Beginner's Guide to Bundles.
