How do I run a monthly art supplies club on Shopify?

Sell the club as a Subscription box option in Supr: a new box every month, the products chosen in advance, a fixed renewal day such as the 1st, and an automatic end after a set number of boxes. Subscribers can skip a month, and the box follows the new date.

Who this is for: For shops that want to run a monthly kit club for art, craft or hobby supplies, with a fixed ship day and a set number of boxes.

What you are building

A club that ships a monthly kit, for example a sketchbook, two pens and a surprise tool, billed and shipped on the 1st of the month, as a 12 box series. The same setup works for craft kits, model building, stationery and any hobby with a theme each month.

Set it up

  1. In Shopify, open Supr Bundle & Subscription App > Offers, click Create offer, choose Subscription, then Subscription box.
  2. In the option's Subscription box settings, choose New box every: Month.
  3. Under Customers see the box, choose Before it ships, from its reveal date or Only when it arrives (mystery box).
  4. Click Set up boxes. The page lists this month and the next five; click Add a later month to plan further ahead.
  5. For each box, click Add products, pick the products and variants and set a quantity for each. Click Copy the previous box to start a box from the one before, then click Save.
  6. To ship on a fixed day, click Renew on specific dates on the option, turn it on and set Day of month to 1. Choose what happens to the First order: Fulfil immediately, or Wait for the next date to hold the first shipment until the next 1st.
  7. To make it a series, turn on Automatic expiry on the option and set Orders before it ends, for example 12. The first order counts, so 12 is the order at checkout plus 11 renewals.

How a box reaches a subscriber

The product customers subscribe to is the box itself, at the price you sell it for. Each box's products are added to every subscription on that option at no charge, ahead of its next order, so the order lists the box and its products, ready to pack, and the products come out of your inventory like any other sale.

Which box an order gets is decided by the date it is billed, in your store's time zone. With a new box every month, a subscription billed on 3 November gets November's box. The first order, placed at checkout, contains only the box product; the app adds that box's contents to the order as a note named Box, [month], so you know what to pack.

What subscribers can and cannot do

Keep members from leaving

A club lives on retention. Set up a cancellation flow with a different offer for each reason, for example a skip for "too many supplies" and a pause for "I need a break". The step by step is in How to build a cancellation flow for a subscription box.

Questions

Can I change a box after subscribers have signed up?

Yes. Subscriptions due in a box you changed are updated within a few minutes. Orders already billed are not changed.

What decides which box an order gets?

The date the order is billed, in your store's time zone. A skipped order or one moved to another date gets the box of its new date.

Can subscribers choose the products in their box?

No. A box is chosen by you and is the same for everyone on the option. Subscribers can skip a month.

Can renewals fall on the same day for every member?

Yes. Turn on Renew on specific dates on the option and set Day of month. It only affects new subscriptions, and a monthly option can only pick a day of the month.

Every setting is covered in the help center: Subscription boxes.
