How do I run a craft kit club on Shopify with themed boxes that end after 6 or 12?

Sell the club as a Subscription box option in Supr and turn on Automatic expiry with Orders before it ends set to 6 or 12. The subscription ends itself after that many orders, the first one included, so a 6 box series is the order at checkout plus 5 renewals. Plan one themed box per month on the Set up boxes page, and point members at the next series with Suggest an upgrade.

Who this is for: For craft, knitting and hobby shops that want a themed kit club that ends after 6 or 12 boxes and offers members the next series.

The example used here

A knitting and embroidery shop sells "The Stitch Year": a 12 box series at $34 a box, one theme a month (January is cross stitch, February is felt, March is natural dyes, and so on), plus a shorter 6 box "Starter Series" at $36 a box. Both are limited runs, so a member who joins in January finishes in December and is never charged a thirteenth time. The prices are only an illustration.

The general box setup, the fixed ship day and the portal are covered in How to run a monthly art supplies club on Shopify. This article is about the part that makes a club a series: how it ends and what you offer next.

Set up the series

  1. In Shopify, open Supr Bundle & Subscription App > Offers, click Create offer, choose Subscription, then Subscription box. Name the option "12 box series".
  2. In its Subscription box settings, choose New box every: Month, then click Set up boxes and add one box per month with Add products. Copy the previous box saves time when only a few items change.
  3. On the same option, click Automatic expiry, turn it on and set Orders before it ends to 12.
  4. Click Add subscription option and repeat for the "6 box series", with Orders before it ends set to 6.
  5. Click Save and check the offer on a product page.

Both settings only apply to new subscriptions. Members who already subscribed keep the terms they bought, so changing a 12 into a 10 later does not shorten anyone's series.

What happens at the last order

The docs do not say the app sends a dedicated "your series has ended" email. Test one subscription through to its last order and check what the member sees, then write your own message in your email tool if you want one.

One theme per box

Which box an order gets is decided by the date it is billed, in your store's time zone, so a member billed on 3 March gets March's box. Every member on the option gets the same box that month, which keeps packing simple: one kit to assemble, one batch to order.

Decide on Customers see the box: Before it ships, from its reveal date works for a themed club, because members see "Your next box" in the portal and the Subscription box revealed email lists its products once per box. A month with no box set ships the box product alone, and the option's settings warn you when the current or next box is not set yet.

Offer the next series

  1. Create the next series as another subscription option in the same offer, for example "Stitch Year 2, 12 boxes".
  2. Open the option your members are on (the 6 box series), click Suggest an upgrade under Schedule in its additional settings, and pick the option to Suggest. It needs more than one subscription option in the offer.
  3. Members on that option see an Upgrade to card in the customer portal with the new option's name and discount and a See the new price button. It opens the usual Change subscription option window, which shows the next order's cost before they confirm.

The card sits in the portal for the whole subscription, not only at the last box, so it works as a standing invitation. Reword it under Settings > Customer portal > Labels > Upgrade suggestion. The portal also has to let customers change their subscription option, or the card does not appear.

Test how the order count carries over when a member moves from the 6 box option to the 12 box option, so the new series ends when you expect. The docs do not spell that out.

Keep the series from leaking

A limited run is worth most when members stay to the end. Offer a skip or a pause as an alternative to cancelling, as described in How to build a cancellation flow for a subscription box.

Questions

Does the first order count toward Orders before it ends?

Yes. Orders before it ends counts orders including the first one placed at checkout. A setting of 6 is the first order plus 5 renewals.

Can I change the length for people who already joined?

No. Automatic expiry and minimum commitment only apply to new subscriptions. Existing members keep the terms they bought.

How do I see which members have finished the series?

A subscription that reached its limit and ended on its own is marked Completed in the subscriptions list.

Can members swap the products in a themed box?

No. A box is chosen by you and is the same for everyone on the option. Members can skip a month.

Every setting is covered in the help center: Requiring a minimum number of payments before cancellation.
