How can a pet food store sell buy 2 get 1 free treats next to subscribe-and-save dog food?

A pet food store builds two offers in Supr: a Subscription offer on the food (for example 10% off, delivered every 4 weeks) and a Bundle offer on the treats with a Buy X, get Y option (buy 2 get 1 free). Both show on their own product pages, shoppers check out through the normal Shopify cart, and the subscriptions, bundle orders and reports all live in the same app.

Who this is for: For pet stores that sell treats as a buy 2 get 1 free deal next to food on subscribe and save, in one cart.

The example used here

A store sells a $48 bag of dog food and a $12 pack of chewy treats. The food is offered on subscription at 10% off every 4 weeks. The treats are offered as buy 2 get 1 free, which charges $24 for three packs. The numbers are only an illustration, use your own.

Offer 1: the food on subscription

  1. In Shopify, open Supr Bundle & Subscription App > Offers, click Create offer and choose Subscription.
  2. In Offer details, name the offer and choose what it Applies to, for example the food collection.
  3. Edit the starter subscription option: set Repeat order every to 4 and Order intervals to Week, and leave the Discount on at 10%.
  4. Optionally, open Additional settings and turn on Custom fields to ask a question on the product page, such as your pet's name. The answer is saved on the subscription.
  5. Click Save, then make sure the offer is published.

Add a second option with another frequency if some dogs eat faster. The shopper picks it on the product page.

Offer 2: the treats, buy 2 get 1 free

  1. Click Create offer, choose Bundle and pick Buy X get Y as the starting point.
  2. Set the offer to apply to the treats, then set the option to buy 2 and get 1 free.
  3. Click Save and check the product page.

The items being bought are charged at full price and the reward is the whole discount, so the 3 pack costs $24. The reward goes to the cheapest unit in the set. On a product with sizes or flavours, each of the three units gets its own picker, so a shopper can take two beef packs and a free chicken one.

A bundle offer can be bought one time or on subscription. If you want the treats deal on one-time orders only, turn on One-time purchase only on the option.

What the shopper does

On the food page the shopper chooses a subscription. On the treats page they choose the buy 2 get 1 free option. Both go into the same Shopify cart, and one checkout pays for them. The cart shows the subscription's name under the food and the bundle's saving as a discount on the treats line.

Shopify groups products by delivery frequency when it creates subscriptions. If the treats were also on a subscription at a different frequency than the food, one checkout would create two subscriptions, each with its own schedule. Test your own combination with a test order before you publish.

Put the treats on subscription too by making their offer a Bundle + Subscription offer. The subscription discount then comes off each unit first and the reward is worked out on that price: with 10% off, buy 2 get 1 free on a $12 pack charges 2 x $10.80 = $21.60.

One portal

Subscribers manage the food and any subscribed treats in one customer portal. Under Settings > Customer portal you choose what they may do: pause, skip, change the delivery frequency with Change subscription plans, and more. A subscribed bundle shows its items grouped under the bundle's name.

Adding a deal to an existing subscription has a limit. The portal's Add bundles setting (off by default) lets customers add a build a box, a fixed bundle or a quantity break from your offers, and our help center says buy X get Y bundles cannot be added to an existing subscription this way yet. So for buy 2 get 1 free treats, the shopper buys the deal in the cart, together with the food.

One set of reports

Analytics shows bundle revenue, Bundle orders and your subscription charts side by side, so you see the treats and the food in one place. A bundle bought on subscription is counted once in Revenue from Supr. The Offers tab compares each offer's visitors, orders and revenue, so you can see whether the treats deal sells more than the food subscription. For two versions of the same offer, use an A/B test under Grow > A/B tests.

Questions

Can the free treats be a different flavour?

Yes. On a product with several variants, each unit in the set has its own picker, and the reward goes to the cheapest unit.

Do shoppers pay shipping for the free treats?

Shipping follows your Shopify shipping settings, as for any order. Free shipping on a subscription option is a separate setting on that option.

Can a subscriber add the buy 2 get 1 free treats to the next food delivery?

Our help center says buy X get Y bundles cannot be added to an existing subscription from the portal or the admin yet. Add a different product, or ask them to buy the deal in the cart with their next food order.

Does the subscription discount stack on the treats deal?

On a Bundle + Subscription offer the subscription discount comes off each unit first and the free unit is worked out on that lower price. Turn on One-time purchase only if you want the deal on one-time orders only.

Every setting is covered in the help center: Bundle types: quantity breaks, Buy X Get Y, fixed bundles, and build-a-box.
