How does a snack shop let customers pick 6 from 20 flavours without selling a flavour it has run out of?
A snack shop does it with a Build your own bundle option (the app's name for mix and match or build-a-box) in Supr Bundle & Subscription App: one group with the 20 flavours as its products, Minimum to pick and Maximum to pick both set to 6, and a Box price. A flavour the store cannot sell reads Unavailable and cannot be picked, and the box buttons switch off if a shopper picks more of one flavour than you have.
Who this is for: For snack and food shops that want customers to pick their own 6 from a range of flavours, even when some sell out.
The example used here
A snack shop sells 20 flavours of popcorn and crackers, one Shopify product per flavour. The box is any 6 of them for $30. The numbers are an illustration. If you also sell a box of 12, add one option per size or use the tiered discounts below.
Set it up
- In Shopify, open Supr Bundle & Subscription App > Offers, click Create offer and choose Bundle (or Bundle + Subscription if people can subscribe to a box).
- On Choose a bundle type, filter by Build your own and pick a starting point, or click Start from scratch and add an option of type Build your own bundle (BYOB).
- Set the Box price, for example a Fixed price of 30, or a Percentage off.
- In the group, give it a Group name such as "Pick your 6". Set Minimum to pick and Maximum to pick to 6, which means exactly 6.
- Under Products customers can choose from, add the 20 flavours.
- Decide on Let customers pick the same product more than once. On, one flavour can fill several slots (three of the same flavour is fine). Off, a box of 6 means 6 different flavours.
- Check Starting items, which is what the box holds when the page loads, then click Save.
What shoppers see with 20 flavours
The box opens already full with your starting items and shows its price straight away, so a shopper who likes your selection can add it in one tap. With more than six products, each slot is a row with a picture and name and a Change button. It opens a short list where each product shows its price and a Choose button, so 20 flavours never push the price and add to cart button down the page.
Tick Search, sort and filter on the option to add a search box and a sort menu to that list, which helps at 20 products. Every word the box prints is yours to change under Design > Labels, in the Build-a-box group.
What happens when a flavour sells out
This follows your Shopify inventory for products that Track quantity with Continue selling when out of stock turned off. The product page reads the stock of the product it shows. For the other flavours it knows only whether they are sold out, so Shopify's own stock check still applies: if Shopify cannot add the whole box, none of it is added and the shopper sees Shopify's message under the option. You can reword Option sold out and Not enough stock under Design > Labels.
- A flavour your store cannot sell right now (a draft, archived, not on the Online Store, or sold out in every variant) reads Unavailable and cannot be picked.
- If the stock of all the flavours in the group adds up to less than the box needs, the whole option reads Sold out.
- If a shopper picks more of one flavour than you have, the add to cart, Buy it now and express checkout buttons turn off, and a message under the option says how many are left, until they change their picks.
- If the option selected by default is sold out, the next option that can be filled is selected instead when the page loads.
- A starting item your store cannot sell right now leaves its slot empty rather than putting something unbuyable in the box.
Keep every flavour sellable
Each product in a group must be Active in Shopify and available on your Online Store sales channel, or shoppers cannot pick it. A product you duplicate in Shopify starts as a Draft, so a box built from copies has nothing to pick until you set them to Active. If your flavours are variants of one product rather than separate products, build a small test box first and check how a sold-out variant behaves, because the help center describes sold out at product level.
A bigger discount as the box fills
A box option can carry up to 10 Tiered discounts, so one option covers every box size. Set Box price to Full price (or Percentage off), then click Add a discount step and fill in Items in box and Discount, for example 6 or more at 10% and 12 or more at 15%. Every item counts whatever its flavour, the box takes the biggest step it has reached, and a line under the box says how many more items unlock the next one. Steps need a Percentage off or Full price box price, not Amount off or a Fixed price.
On subscription
Every bundle type can also be bought on subscription. The flavours join the offer's subscription, and to let a subscriber change their box later, turn on Edit bundle boxes under Settings > Customer portal (off by default). A box edited there is repriced at the step its new contents reach. For a rotating, chosen-by-you box see Mystery box subscriptions on Shopify.
The help center says build your own is not a step by step wizard: there is no separate choose a box size, then choose by category flow. Customers fill one box from the pools you set.

The buy buttons switch off and a message under the option says how many are left, until they change their picks.
Does the box show a flavour I have run out of?
It shows it as Unavailable and it cannot be picked.
Can I sell boxes of 6 and 12 from one option?
Yes, with tiered discounts: set Minimum to pick and Maximum to pick to your smallest and largest box and add a discount step for each size.
Every setting is covered in the help center: Bundle types: quantity breaks, Buy X Get Y, fixed bundles, and build-a-box.
