How does a tea or coffee shop sell a 3 month gift subscription on Shopify?

A tea shop sells a 3 month gift by making one subscription option in Supr Bundle & Subscription App a Prepaid subscription that covers 3 orders, ticking One-off (single prepaid, no auto-renew) and then Shoppers can send it as a gift. The buyer pays once, a Send as a gift switch on the product page asks for the recipient's email and an optional message, the Date picker lets the buyer choose when the gift arrives, and the subscription ends by itself after the third delivery.

Who this is for: For tea, coffee and gift shops that want to sell a 3 month subscription as a gift.

The example used here

A tea shop sells a monthly tin of loose leaf tea at $18. The gift is 3 months: one tin a month for 3 months, paid for at checkout. Three tins at $18 come to $54.00, charged once. The prices are an illustration, use your own. The same setup works for a coffee roaster, and for coffee in particular see How should a coffee roaster price repeat orders.

Set it up

  1. In Shopify, open Supr Bundle & Subscription App > Offers, click Create offer, choose Subscription, then the Gift subscription card.
  2. The offer opens with one option already prepaid for 3 orders, one-off and Always a gift. Pick the tea product and give the option a clear Option name, such as "3 months".
  3. Check Repeat order every and Order intervals say how often you ship, for example every 1 Month. Always set this to the delivery rhythm, not to how often you bill.
  4. Check Orders covered with each payment is 3. The buyer pays for all three tins at checkout.
  5. Click Save. The option's summary reads "3 orders, one-off, can be gifted" (or "always a gift").

If you would rather add a gift choice to an option you already have, open it, turn on Prepaid subscription, tick One-off (single prepaid, no auto-renew) and then Shoppers can send it as a gift. The gift tickbox only works while One-off is ticked. Always a gift removes the switch: every purchase of that option is a gift. Without it, the same option serves people buying for themselves and people buying a gift.

What the buyer fills in

On the product page the buyer sees a Send as a gift switch while a giftable option is chosen. Switched on, it asks for:

Style the gift box and the email

Under Design > Add-on settings, click Gift subscriptions to reword the switch and the field names, choose what to Also ask for, and set the border and text colours. Translate the texts under Settings > Translations > Widgets, in the Gift subscriptions group.

When the subscription starts, the recipient gets the Gift received email once. It names the buyer, quotes the gift message and lists the products, with no prices and no link to the buyer's account. Edit it under Settings > Notifications > Customer notifications.

Shipping and the start date

A subscription ships to the address it was checked out with. For a gift the buyer enters the recipient's shipping address at checkout, or you change the address later from Subscriptions.

To let the buyer choose when the first tin arrives, for a birthday or a holiday, turn on the Date picker add-on under Design > Add-on settings. The buyer picks a delivery date on the product page. Payment is still taken at checkout: the date decides when the gift is delivered, not when it is paid for.

After the purchase you can move a single delivery yourself. Open the subscription from Subscriptions and click Reschedule on that delivery in the Prepaid schedule card. Untick Reschedule the deliveries after this one too to move just that one.

After the third tin

A one-off prepaid subscription ends on its own once the paid deliveries are done. It shows as Completed and is never charged again, so there is nothing for the buyer to cancel and no surprise renewal. That is also why gifting is only offered on one-off prepaid options.

The recipient's portal: what the docs say

The help center is clear on this point. The subscription stays the buyer's: it sits on the buyer's card, the buyer manages it in the customer portal, and the usual subscription emails go to the buyer. The recipient does not get their own account for it. If you promise a gift recipient a login, you would be promising something the app does not do.

Before you launch, place one test gift with a second email address, then check the cart line (Gift for), the subscription page in Subscriptions (who it is for, their email and the message) and the Gift received email. Also place one with the Date picker, to see the date carried onto the order. An existing subscriber can send just the next order to someone else with Send the next order as a gift under Settings > Customer portal > Next billing date.

Questions

Will the buyer be charged again after the 3 months?

No. With One-off ticked, the subscription ends after the prepaid deliveries, and a gift is always a one-off prepaid.

Can the buyer pick when the gift starts?

Yes, with the Date picker add-on on the Design page. Payment is still taken at checkout.

Does the recipient get an email?

Yes. The buyer must enter the recipient's email, and the Gift received email goes out once, when the subscription starts.

Does the recipient get a login to manage the subscription?

No. The subscription stays in the buyer's name and on the buyer's card, and the buyer manages it in the customer portal.

Can I move one delivery of the gift?

Yes. Open the subscription and click Reschedule on that delivery in the Prepaid schedule card.

Every setting is covered in the help center: Can I offer gift subscriptions?.
